What is Alkyd? The word alkyd is derived from the words alcohol and anhydrite, and the polyester part in the alkyd resin helps hardness of the resin, while the oil and fatty acid part helps flexibility, adhesion, pigment wetting property and solubility with solvents. Alkyd resins are used for condensation of polyols or polyacids due to oil and saturated fatty acids. Alkyd, a kind of polyester, which is formed by the polycondensation reaction of polyhydric alcohol and dibasic acids and is modified with oil or fatty acid, is a synthetic resin. While alkyd resin directly affects a film formation in the paint and varnish systems, it is also the most important constituent that creates other important properties of the coating film such as physical and chemical resistance, adhesion and strength.
How is Alkyd Resin Manufactured? Alkyd resin is obtained by esterification of polyhydric alcohols and dibasic acids and modification with fatty and fatty acids at 200-240°C. The alkyd resin manufacturing process is divided into two: solvent and solvent-free (fusion) process methods.
