ANTIFREEZE MANUFACTURING PLANTS Antifreeze, which is actually a derivative of alcohol, was first discovered by the French chemist Charles Adolphe Wurtz in 1859. Although first antifreeze was not used for vehicles, it started to be used in cars after the effect of water on boiling and freezing temperatures was discovered. In general meaning, antifreeze can be explained as a liquid and organic compound that prevents water from freezing, raises the boiling temperature and prevents rust corrosion, used in the process and vehicle equipment such as cooling systems of internal combustion engines, radiators, machineries, chillers, heating and cooling systems, and generators.
Antifreeze is added to the cooling water of the car engine and other equipment to reduce the freezing temperature of the water and prevent the engine from being damaged in cold weather. When water approaches its freezing temperature, it expandsunlike other substances. The radiator, cylinder blocks and other engine parts can crack under the pressure of the water that expands and freezes. To avoid these hazards, ethanol, methanol, and ethylene glycol are added to the coolant as liquid antifreeze.
Antifreeze, which is a colorless industrial component, does not change color when it is mixed with water. However, there are its colored versions available so that consumers can notice any leakage in the engine easily.
